CAVE OF ZEUS, Crete (Dikti Cave/Psychro Cave): what is it famous for?

Original Description
When we began to clear up what is the real value of this place and why so many tourists come here, we found out that according to the Ancient Greek mythology, the goddess Rhea hid in a cave in the Diktii Mountains, not far from Lasithi, from her husband Kronos. He devoured their children because he was obsessed with the idea that they could take his throne. Here in the cave she gave birth to Zeus, and gave her husband Knossos a stone wrapped in a diaper. And from the end of the 19th century, the cave above the Psychro village was associated with this mythological place. The first excavations in the cave were held in 1886 by Joseph Hadzidakis. Research was continued in 1896 by Arthur John Evans. As a result of the excavations, ancient altars, many statuettes dedicated to Zeus, as well as ceramics from the Early Minoan to the Late Roman period were found. Consequently it was concluded that Zeus was worshiped here continuously for about 2000 years.
