MOUNT JUKTAS Γιούχτας Drone 4K Heraklion Ηράκλειο CRETE GREECE
Juktas (Γιούχτας in Greek) is a important mountain in Heraklion of almost 1,000 meters overlooking the city. Mount Juktas was a very important religious site for the Minoan Civilization. Actually Mount Juktas seems to be the most important Minoan peak sanctuaries. Since it's excavation in 1909 by Sir Arthur Evans many clay figurines of humans and animals were found. Also decorated pottery, tablets with hieroglyphs and inscription of Linear A, double axes and bowls. On the site of the Minoan peak sanctuary there is a Greek Orthodox St Nicholas chapel which nowadays still plays an important role in the religious of the local population. Every year, on the 6th of August, there is a pilgrimage to the mountains with thousands of people by foot. They bring flowers in procession to the chapel.
